My Week on Oahu | Hawaii Photography

How do you describe one of the most beautiful places you've ever seen?

I've been home now from Hawaii for nearly a month. I've had some time to mentally process the experiences, and to digitally process the images. And I can say this...

There is something magical about Hawaii.

While I only spent a week on the island of Oahu, we really made the most of the time we had. We witnessed sunrises and sunsets from Waikiki beach. We climbed the heights of Diamond Head, Koko Head, and Crouching Lion. And perhaps my favorite, got to see one of the most spiritual sunsets at one of the iconic surf beaches in the world, Banzai Pipeline.

The landscape is lush and green. And the water blue and inviting. Where else can you count on seeing a rainbow every single day?

I also have to give a shout out to Finding Ithaka and her blog post, If I had one week on Oahu. Most of what we did was inspired by this list. It was spot on!

We also used an app called Turo to rent a car for a couple days. Turo allows people who have extra cars to allow people to rent them when they are not being used! It's way cheaper than going through one of the big name rental car places on the island. We were able to go up to the north shore for a couple days, which was probably my favorite part of the island.

My wife and I were so moved by the beauty of this place, we are considering a relocation. Eeek! I don't know what the future will bring, but we were forever changed by this magical place in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

April Update

It's been a really busy couple of weeks for me! I've been away from writing and facebook for longer than usual. Granted, it's been super busy at the day job, but I've also been working hard behind the scenes with my photography! But first, let me back track... A couple of years ago, my wife was a bridesmaid in her friend Megan's wedding. They were going to a bridal expo in Philly and she mentioned that it may be a good idea to tag along to meet some wedding photographers and do some networking. After walking around the expo for a little bit, we came across the booth of Caroline Morris ; A young, up and coming wedding photographer. We struck up a conversation. I don't remember much of what she and I talked about, but I remember thinking that she seemed cool and down to earth. We exchanged information and went on our ways. Danae's Boyd Park Shoot

When Danae and I met up last Thursday to do our shoot, I couldn't believe my eyes when I pulled up next to her car. I looked over and saw a sea of long pastel green hair! Danae is a fashion and makeup blogger. We've known each other for several years having been coworkers at my last job. We've kept in touch since then and have done photo shoots together on several occasions. It's been really cool seeing the progression in her style choices as well as her comfortability behind the camera. Similarly, my skills as a portrait photographer have increased drastically since our first shoot.  For this shoot, we decided to meet at Boyd Park in New Brunswick which runs along the Raritan River. I had never been there before but when I arrived, I knew this would be a great place to shoot with lots of awesome backdrops and cool colors and textures.  Not to mention that Danae absolutely brought it with her hair, fierce looks, and killer outfit! First Week of 2015!

2015 is just about a week old and there've already been many opportunities for photos. It's been a great start to the year. I don't consider myself a meteorologist, but I've been following the weather patterns and surf reports. It's definitely helped me be in the right place at the right time! I didn't wake up (or stay up for that matter) to watch the first sunrise of the new year. But I did photograph the second sunrise of the new year. It was a pretty special morning. The light reflecting off the clouds before the sun popped over the horizon was really amazing. And my new camera has the ability to pick up colors and textures at lower lights that my old camera just couldn't develop. I don't think having a better camera makes you a better photographer, but it will help make a good shot even better.  Warm air moved through the area over the weekend accompanying some rain and wind. This generated the first swell of the year for surfers. May
